Vegas Schools Guide: Summerlin's Palo Verde High

One of the top priorities for home buyers with children is being in an area with good schools — no surprise there. As a way of helping those prospective buyers, we’re taking a look at different schools in the Vegas area and providing some pros and cons for each one.

Palo Verde High School is the high school for most families who live in Summerlin.

It’s a quite diverse school with 46% of the student body being a minority, 50% being women and 21% being economically disadvantaged. One review on Niche told the story of a student with autism who found support in the school. “... the wonderful teachers and administration staff were so nice, patient, and willing to give me the extra time I needed.”

On the downside, the school is pretty large with around 3,000 students. It also has a 21:1 student-teacher ratio, which is worse than the state average of 17:1. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem like this has a huge impact on education as the school has an 88% graduation rate, which is much higher than the state average of 72%. This might have to do with the fact that 90% of teachers have 3+ years of experience.

In addition, Palo Verde has higher state testing scores than both the district and state averages. But if you’re a high-level student, you might find the AP options slim as there aren’t a lot of AP students.

While most students and parents agree that there is a good variety of clubs and sports, they also agree that those activities are underfunded.
